Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my student is cut out for an online course?

There is no single profile of a successful online learner, but there are certain traits that tend to lead to a higher rate of success. The first is self-motivation. In traditional classes, students are scheduled to be somewhere at a certain time. In an online class, students can attend the class any time (we will not offer any classes where everyone must be logged in at the same time). The advantage of this is that students set their own schedules. The potential disadvantage is that a student who is not self-motivated may not log in as much as he or she should. Students with strong reading comprehension skills and students who don’t have to have immediate feedback also seem to be at an advantage.

Are there programs for younger students?
Summit Virtual offers classes for students in every grade. While high school students tend to have more available classes because of a wide variety of electives, younger students can mirror the same classes they would take in a live setting. The one item to keep in mind for parents is that younger students may need more help initially with logging in to classes and getting oriented, but once they figure it out it will be smooth sailing!
Does my kid have to take all online classes?
Summit virtual is set up primarily for students who want to take all of their classes online. We have a partnership with a local school district for students who want to take a combination of live and online classes.

Where do they work on the online classes?
Most Summit Virtual students will work on their classes from home or wherever they may be travelling. We have a beautiful Summit Virtual location in which students may also work on their classes, get help from an adult, and enjoy time with their Summit Virtual classmates.

How much does an online class cost me?
There is no cost to a student for taking up to twelve online classes per school year.

How does the credit work?
Students work toward the Michigan graduation credits as established by the Michigan Department of Education. Students receive the grade they earn in each of their classes. A semester class is usually a 1/2 credit toward graduation.

Is there a grade for a class?
Yes. The student will get the grade he or she receives in the class. For Advanced Placement (AP) classes taken through the our providers, students are also expected to take the AP exam that corresponds with the class.
